This week marks Women's Health week, a good time to remind moms that even though they take care of others, they need to take care of themselves.

Here's John Lisk with today's Health Minute.

When Yvette Selby gave birth to twins five years ago, she started to worry about her children's health more than her own. She gained weight and was eventually diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. That's when she knew she had to make a change.

"I realized that I wasn't taking care of myself."

Her physician, Dr. Angela Marshall says Selby's case is not unusual, especially for minority women.

"Women of color are more likely to be single parents. they work longer hours and have more responsibilities."

Which can be stressful. Marshall recommends women get at least seven hours of sleep.

"We've all heard the saying a woman's work is never done. And if a woman waits until all her work is done, she will never get any sleep."

And get out and exercise. Just move. It can make all the difference in the way your body functions.

And get yearly checkups. Mammograms, sugar levels and blood pressure numbers are all important.

And finally, look for a doctor who understands women's need.

"Biochemically we are different, the symptoms we experience are different."

Today, Selby's lost 65 pounds and is off her diabetes medication. That's because she takes the time now to think about herself.
