The Wood County Alternative Transportation Council, in collaboration with the Parkersburg Bicycle Advisory Board, is starting a new bicycle safety-awareness program. Information about the council can be found on the organization's Facebook page "Bike and Hike, Parkersburg, WV." The site contains information on local biking and hiking events and activities; educational materials; and bicycle-related changes in the community. The project is funded by fundraising activities and by local foundations grants. The organization's goal is to increase bicycle safety by improving the ability to ride with traffic as well as heighten motorist awareness and to make cycling on roads in Wood County safer and less intimidating. In particular, the group is stressing the importance of the "3 Feet Please" law that was passed in 2014. The council will be purchasing bike racks for the area, and members plan to talk to organizations and schools to help educate people about the new law, which says a motor vehicle must provide a minimum of 3 feet when passing a bicyclist on the roadway. The organization also wants to remind people that a bicyclist has the same rights and must follow the same highway rules as a motor vehicle.
