Jan Dils' Golden Apple Award: September

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - The new school year is well underway and that means it's time to once again start handing out the Jan Dils' Golden Apple award.

The first winner for the 2017-2018 year is Holmes Marty. Marty is a 5th grade teacher at Blennerhassett Elementary School.

This year, Marty went above and beyond for his students after tragedy struck. Following the accidental death his former student, Harlee Becker, he sent notes to the parents of Harlee's friends saying he'd be at the funeral for the kids.

He wants students to be the best they can be and he believes reading is one of the most important things they can do.

When asked if there was a favorite moment in his teacher career, he couldn't choose just one.

"Every day is a new adventure and I learn new things because we learn from each other. I don't have a specific moment, there's just so many of them I couldn't narrow it down. I was always inspired by teachers. There are so many wonderful teachers in Wood County. I went to Greenmont, Jackson, PHS...I'm actually from the other side of the river, but this community has really embraced me," Marty said.
