PARKERSBURG, W.Va.` (WTAP) - A local sixth grader is in the running for $5,000 because of her generous donations to the community.
Mallory Marks, 11, who attends Edison Middle School, is one of two West Virginia students to receive the 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Award for outstanding volunteer service.
Marks, a 4-H club member, collected donations over the holidays for needy children and adults. She collected hundreds of items on clients' wish lists.
Marks says it felt good to help those who often get overlooked.
“I have collected hygiene items for the ARC, and I have put around flyers to my church, school, and the community. I think it makes them feel proud to know that someone is taking care of them."
Of the 31,000 participants nominated, 102 were selected as state honorees. They now get a free trip to Washington D.C. in May for a chance to be one of the ten "Top Youth Volunteers."
