HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Five people were arrested in a large drug raid Wednesday morning in the 700 block of 8th Avenue, Huntington Police say.

As many as 21 people were detained during the raid.

Police detained 20 people for questioning and arrested 3 others during a drug bust on Wednesday at an apartment complex in Huntington.

Huntington Police are still on scene of the drug bust, which began at 9;30 A.M. Wednesday at an apartment complex in the 700 block of 8th Avenue.

Investigators say they've received hundreds of complaints about alleged crime there, from neighbors and people just driving by the complex, and they've been working on this investigation for a couple months.

Over the past two days police had one home under video surveillance, where, at one point, they saw more than a dozen people at the back of the building waiting to get in.

Approximately 20 people have been detained including a 16-year-old girl. Three people have been arrested.

Investigators have not made it inside the apartment complex yet. Police are waiting on the health department to clean out the needles and make sure it's safe.

When officers got on scene, they say they could barely get through the hallways because of all of the people passed out with needles.

"This is not necessarily about the dope," Huntington Police Captain Rocky Johnson said. "It's taking care of a community problem."

Police say most of the people who were detained don't live in the apartment complex.
