UPDATE: Belpre City Schools to reopen Friday after repairs made to broken water pipe

BELPRE, Ohio (WTAP) - UPDATE: 1/04/18 5:30 P.M.

Belpre City Schools will reopen Friday and operate on a 2 hour delay due to the frigid, wintry conditions.

On Thursday, Superintendent Tony Dunn says a water pipe on the second floor of Belpre Elementary School froze and burst. The water leaked into classrooms on both the first and second floors.

One of the classrooms will not be in use for several days.

Dunn says the whole district was closed because he believed closing Belpre Elementary School would affect other schools in the district.

"We had to shut the water off in the entire building to isolate the leak and you can't have school without water," he said.

He said the appropriate repairs were made Thursday morning.

All Belpre City Schools are closed on Thursday, as crews repair damage from a broken water pipe.

Belpre City Schools Superintendent Tony Dunn says a water pipe burst on the second floor of Belpre Elementary School, flooding three primary classrooms.

Dunn says classes were canceled on Thursday at both the elementary school and the high school, because many high school students in the area have to take care of younger siblings while their parents are at work.

Dunn says crews have repaired the broken pipe and are repairing water damage in affected classrooms, and he hopes to have both schools re-open Friday on a 2-hour delay because of forecast wind chill factors.
