PARKERSBURG, WV (WTAP) - A Clarksburg man faces felony charges after he backed into a Parkersburg Police vehicle and led officers on a pursuit.
Parkersburg Police say the chase began at 12:25 P.M. on Tuesday, in the 1600 block of 7th Street in Parkersburg, when a vehicle driven by Kevin Lee Thompson, 38, of Clarksburg, WV, backed out of a private parking lot and hit a Parkersburg Police Department patrol car, then drove away from the scene.
The officer in that patrol car activated the emergency lights and siren and stopped Thompson's vehicle in the 1700 block of 7th Street.
When the officer asked Thompson to provide his identification and vehicle registration and insurance, Thompson refused to provide those documents and again drove away.
Officers chased the vehicle until Thompson entered U.S. Route 50 traveling west in the eastbound lanes.
The officers entered the westbound lanes of U.S. 50 and continued to chase Thompson, who was still driving west in the eastbound lanes, as he nearly struck several vehicles head-on, according to a criminal complaint.
The chase ended when Thompsonn's vehicle crashed near the Staunton Avenue exit of Route 50.
After the crash, Thompson exited his vehicle and tried to run from Wood County Sheriff's deputies and Parkersburg Police officers, who had to use a Taser on him to force him to the ground, where they arrested him.
Thompson was charged with felony fleeing with reckless indifference and was booked at Parkersburg Police Headquarters without further incident.
He was then taken to Camden Clark Medical Center for medical clearance prior to being incarcerated at the North Central Regional Jail, where he remains on a $5,000 bond.
The officers involved in the crash and pursuit were not injured.
