MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Services are scheduled Thursday for sports writer Mickey Furfari, who covered West Virginia University athletics during a career spanning seven decades.
Furfari died Monday at age 92. According to Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown, visitations will be held Wednesday at the funeral home and on Thursday morning at St. John University Parish in Morgantown. A funeral Mass at the church is set for 11 a.m. Thursday.
Furfari spent four decades as sports editor and in other management roles at newspapers in Morgantown. After retiring from full-time work in 1989, his syndicated sports columns continued to appear in papers across the state.
The Morgantown native was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2011.
