PARKERSBURG, W.Va.-(WTAP) On Tuesday, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice announced proposed federal grants to extend the North Bend Rail Trail to Parkersburg and to pave new sidewalks in Ritchie County.

A total of more than half a million dollars is being recommended for federal funding for sidewalk construction projects, for the communities of Cairo and Pennsboro in Ritchie County.

And more than $223,000 is being recommended for federal funding for land acquisition for extension of the North Bend rail trail to Corning Park in the city of Parkersburg.

"This finally makes a connection between WVU's parking area all the way into Parkersburg," says Mark Abbott, President of the North Bend Rails to Trails Foundation. "Once we get into the vicinity of DeBarr Trucking, we're working with the Department of Transportation and some other business there, to finally connect us right to the city trail."

The foundation is still in discussions with CSX Railroad for use of the right of way to complete the trail extension.
