Museum warns of potential scammer

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - A scammer has reportedly been asking for donations, pretending it's for a local museum.

Monday, a man came forward and told the Veterans Museum of the Mid Ohio Valley in Parkersburg that he gave $50 in cash to a man that called him on the phone, claiming to represent them.

The museum says it has no third party solicitors at this time and that they never got this money.

They want other people to know the safest way to donate is to either drop it off directly at their site on Seventh Street or mail it.

Officials with the museum say they're filing a report with police and are changing their donation policy.

"I don't want people to think that the museum had any part in this at all. We didn't. There won't be any third parties involved. We will no be hiring any solicitors any time soon," said Angela Shoemaker, events and program coordinator at the museum.

If you think you might be a victim, call Parkersburg Police at 304-424-8444.
