Purple ribbons in downtown Parkersburg raise awareness of domestic violence

PARKERSBURG, W. Va. (WTAP) - If you have traveled down Market Street in the last few days you may have noticed some colorful ribbons were put up.

The purple ribbons tied to light poles and parking meters along Market Street are to shine a light on Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Installed by the Family Crisis Intervention Center, the ribbons not only raise awareness of domestic violence issues, but have cards with important contact information for people who might be going through domestic violence.

In the 2017-2018 year, 34 people in total were killed in West Virginia as a result of domestic violence, 4 of which were in the WTAP viewing area.
