Fire destroys home on Hawthorne Street in Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - A fire destroyed a house in South Parkersburg Sunday morning, leaving a man without his home.

The Parkersburg Fire Department responded to the fire on Hawthorne Street just after 5 a.m. Sunday.

Fire Chief Jason Matthews says the blaze started on the front porch. The home's only occupant made it out safely.

Matthews says the fire caused a power line to fall after the first engine arrived, and the snow and ice also acted as obstacles. But first responders contained the fire with no reported injuries.

Units left the scene just before 11 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
