(WTAP) - Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks has some tips for you to keep you safe when shopping this holiday season.
He recommends shopping in a group rather than by yourself.
He also says it’s best to shop during the day. But if you have to go at night, park as close to the entrance as possible or in a well-lit area.
If you purchase a lot of items, he says to make several trips to the car to put them inside. Once they’re inside, make sure the items are not visible to those walking by your car.
It’s also important to be aware of your surroundings.
“We also have people when you’re leaving the car and going in just try to basically assault you and take your purse if you’re a lady or a billfold so what I suggest is credit cards, just take credit cards with you and carry them in a right front or left front pocket," Sheriff Mincks said.
Ohio’s Attorney General recommends shoppers beware of scams, check refund policies before they make purchases, research sellers carefully, look for exclusions and limitations in ads, understand the difference among gift cards, keep cybersecurity in mind, and consider paying with a credit card.
