Two fires destroy structures in one overnight in Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG, W.Va.-(WTAP) The cause of two fires that kept Parkersburg firefighters busy late Sunday night and early Monday morning is undetermined.

Both fires were in vacant structures-a home on 4th Avenue early Monday and in a pair of mobile homes Sunday night.

The trailers were owned by a local construction firm.

Parkersburg Fire Chief Jason Matthews says in both cases, the empty buildings are often visited by people looking for shelter. That's according to neighbors on 4th Avenue and the owners of the trailers.

"We can't rule out vagrants being in there, especially with the cold weather and the wet weather," Matthews said. "We just can't say one way or the other staying warm or cooking or even smoking could have been used on any of them."

No injuries were reported in either fire.

Chief Matthews does not believe the two fires were related.
