DULLES, VA. (WTAP) – A Martinsburg, WV man was detained and cited by police after security agents found a loaded gun in his carry-on bag at Washington Dulles International Airport on Friday.

The Transportation Security Administration says a TSA officer found a .22 caliber handgun, which was loaded with 5 bullets, in the man's carry-on bag as it passed through an x-ray monitor at an airport security checkpoint.

The man, whose name was not released, told officers he forgot he had the loaded gun in his carry-on bag.

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police detained the man for questioning and cited him on a state weapons violation.

The TSA says more than 80 percent of handguns caught at U.S. airport security checkpoints each year are loaded.
