UPDATE: WVUP to remain open Wednesday, December 5th

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) - UPDATE 12/5/18 12:57 a.m.:

West Virginia University Parkersburg (WVUP) will remain open on Wednesday, December 5th. In a statement released from school president Dr. Chris Gilmer, the school intends to honor and remember the late George H.W. Bush through the day on campus.

Gilmer states his reasoning for not closing campus is due to the fact of how close the university is to final exams and fall commencement. While this decision is not in line with West Virginia governor Jim Justice's wishes, Gilmer has issued the following statement regarding his decision:

"Governor Justice has declared Wednesday, December 5, as a statewide day of mourning. After consultation with Chancellor Sarah Tucker, a number of the community colleges have decided to remember and honor the contributions of President Bush on December 5, but not to close campuses this close to final exams and commencement."

Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt and Wood county schools have all elected to remain closed during the day of mourning.
