New Stations To Sign on Sept. 3

Update ... Gray Television’s two new TV stations in the Parkersburg–Marietta area, will begin airing programs starting on Labor Day.

One change is that WTAP’s PinPoint Weather channel, which can be seen free over-the-air on digital channel 15.4, will stay where it is and will NOT be moving to 15.2 as previously planned. You will also still be able to see the PinPoint Weather information overnight on our My5 station just as you do now.

Gray Television's new stations are now on the air in the Parkersburg-Marietta area.

WIYE digital channel 47 and WOVA digital channel 22 were officially activated for testing purposes on Tuesday, August 21, 2012.

"About six years ago, we only had an NBC affiliate," says TheNewsCenter's VP, Roger Sheppard. "In 2006, we added our FOX and MyNetwork stations. A few months ago, we activated a new PinPoint Weather Channel, to provide around-the clock radar and weather information to our viewers who do not have cable or satellite service. On Labor Day, we'll launch our new CBS station, making us a five-station market."

TheNewsCenter is the new name that Gray Television will use in the Mid-Ohio Valley, to refer to all of its various properties, including this webchannel. The webchannel's main address will become www.TheNewsCenter.tv in the next couple of weeks but you;ll still be able to access it through www.wtap.com.

Area residents who rely on antennas to receive television signals, can go ahead and scan in these new channels NOW, so they will be ready to go when the transition occurs on Sept. 3.

"On that morning, we will turn on our CBS station's actual programming on WIYE-TV, digital channel 47.1," Sheppard says. Right now, the station is running a CBS 47 logo and music to help folks know when they have the channel scanned in.

FOX Parkersburg, which has been available for several years in standard definition on digital channel 15.2, is now available in high definition on digital channel 22, WOVA-TV. The 15.2 signal will cease on Sept. 3rd.

My5, which has been on 15.3 for the past few years, is now on digital channel 47.2. The 15.3 signal will also end on September 3rd.

WTAP's new PinPoint Weather channel, which has been available on 15.4, will move up to 15.2 when the FOX and My5 stations move to their new positions.

Here's a chart to help explain where everything will be:

WTAP-NBC HD 49.1 (or 15.1) ……… No change
WTAP-FOX PKB 15.2 ……… Now in HD on WOVA ch. 22; ch 15.2 goes away Sept. 3rd
WTAP-My5 15.3 ……… Becomes WIYE…ch. 47.2; ch. 15.3 goes away Sept. 3rd
New CBS-WIYE ch 47.1 ……… Test signal becomes CBS on Sept. 3rd
PinPoint Weather 15.4 ……… Becomes 15.2 on September 3rd

These channels will be carried on most, if not all, cable and satellite systems serving the valley. Some of the channel numbers have not yet been determined.

Dish has already announced that it will replace its current out-of-market CBS station (WDTV-TV) with WIYE on the same channel number: five. That carriage will begin before the end of August.

DirecTV plans to launch the new CBS station in HD on its channel 47. No word as to whether it will continue carrying WBNS from Columbus, OH.

"It's entirely up to the cable and satellite companies whether or not they continue carrying any out-of-market CBS stations," Sheppard says. "It's their business decision, not ours."

Suddenlink Cable is planning to include the new CBS station, as is Zito Media, whose cable systems serves Warner, OH. Discussions are continuing with CAS and Time Warner Cable.

If you have any questions, or run into an problems finding these new over-the-air channels, please contact Roger Sheppard at 304-481-8110.

Two new television stations are coming to the Valley … and one of them is CBS.

Gray Television, Inc. -- parent company of WTAP, FOX Parkersburg and My5 -- announced these two new stations on July 17, 2012.

On or about September 1st, the new CBS station will be launched in HD on WIYE-TV, digital channel 47. The call letters of WIYE were selected because of their similarity to the word "eye," in reference to the CBS logo. WIYE will also carry My5 as a side channel.

At about the same time, FOX Parkersburg will move to WOVA-TV. That way, folks who receive television signals free, over-the-air, will be able to see it in HD. Currently, as a side channel to WTAP, FOX Parkersburg is only offered in standard definition. The letters "OVA" are meant to stand for Ohio Valley.

WTAP's NBC station will continue to be on digital channels 15.1. Our new PinPoint Weather Channel will move up to channel 15.2.

Gray Television, Inc. is a television broadcast company headquartered in Atlanta, GA. Gray currently operates 36 television stations serving 30 markets. It broadcasts a primary channel from each of its stations and also operates at least one secondary channel from the majority of its stations. Each of its primary channels are affiliated with either CBS (17 channels), NBC (10 channels), ABC (8 channels) or FOX (1 channel). In addition, it currently operates 40 digital second channels that are affiliated with either ABC (1 channel), FOX (4 channels), CW (8 channels), MyNetworkTV (18 channels), Untamed Sports Network (1 channel) and The Country Network (1 channel) or are operated as local news/weather channels (7 channels).

"We are excited to become the new home for CBS in the Parkersburg-Marietta area," said Roger Sheppard, vice president and general manager of WTAP and the new stations.

"Until about six years ago, we were only one TV station, our flagship NBC affiliate. Now, that station is stronger than ever. And it will soon be one of five locally-operated TV stations."

In addition to its NBC, FOX and now CBS stations, Gray Television operates a local MyNetwork station (called "My5") and it has recently begun offering a local 24-hour weather channel, called PinPoint Weather.

"PinPoint Weather was created entirely by WTAP's Production Manager, Larry White, and Engineer, Kevin Buskirk. It has been available free, over-the-air on digital channel 15.4 for several weeks. You can also sample it overnight on My5. It provided crucial information for local residents after the recent storms as power began to come on. It was the only local TV source of 24-hour-a-day weather radar and information. WTAP even re-broadcast its local newscasts on that channel in the days that followed the storm, since more and more people were coming back on line with electricity all the time."

"We'll move some of our stations around, but we'll let everyone know where they can find what," Sheppard said.

"CBS carries a lot of programming of all types," Sheppard said. "We have not yet made all of the decisions regarding other programming for our new CBS station."

Exact cable channels for the new CBS station have not yet been determined but it will be carried on virtually every cable system in the area and will also be available via satellite.

New station line-up
